DB_1_EDUC 696 Script To start this conversation about Professionalism I would like to tell you a history that happened with me some years ago when I started looking for a job in Recife City Brazil. I was desperate to find a job because I didn’t have food or a place to live. I was living with an aunt and they didn’t have education or hope, everybody in the family was so hopeless. After Looking for several days, I finally got the opportunity to have an interview, I went to a huge building full of people, each one of them was well dressed, I received a paper to answer some important questions about the job position. I think that from about fifty people I was selected to be in the group of five finalists, the result was I did not get a job, but I got an important lesson from life. Why? I went to the man that was interviewing and asked why didn’t I get it if I answered all the questions right, what did I do wrong? He looked at me and said a phrase to me in another language (English) and asked me, did you understand what I said? I did not have time to answer him. He told me, you do not speak English and the way you are dressed does not represent our company. He was right. I did not know how to speak English and I was very poor to be able to dress in nice clothes. But I learned that I should dress very professional and If you learn a new language it opens a huge opportunity in life. Since that time, I look to learn how to be professional in everything I do. Dr. Moore Austin Talking about professionalism in the aspect of an educator on the way we should dress states “As a professional, you always want to make sure your clothes are professional laid out”. As Dr. Austin said, “as a teacher, we are all a model to our students” (2012). In my point of view, it is crucial we watch our self on how we dress in front of our students an anybody else. People will judge you by the way you look. Because the “Man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart” (1 sam. 16:7, The King James Version). Thus, we must be professional in our appearance, the way we speak, and the way we treat others, These will help the man judge us better, by the way, we dress they will look with their eyes and the way we speak and treat others they will see what we have on our heart. As educators, we have a duty to act in a professional way in everything we say, and do. Dr. Goodwin said “As educators we really need to display auto professionalism because we are training professionals for the future” (2012). I totally agree with what Dr Goodwin said. Our field experience can open some doors for us. If people see our performance in a professional manner consistently and it also can be the opposite, the way you perform unprofessionally will close some doors. What behaviors should people see in us? 10-B-Commandment of professional persons
To conclude, I have learned that being professional is one of the most crucial aspects to be successful in any Job. Reference Austin-Moore, S., Goodwin, M., & Silvey, J. [Liberty University]. (2012).
